We are fans, of movies, and of television shows. The stories that truly move us, that make us think about them long after we’ve seen them and long before we watch them again, all have qualities that hook us, pull us in forever.
Long ago, when home video moved from VHS/Betamax to DVDs, extras like blooper reels, deleted scenes, behind the scenes featurettes, and storyboard galleries were included to lure the avid fans of those movies and TV shows into buying a new copy of the same home release they’d already purchased.
Well, it worked. So studios continued to produce home video releases with more and more extras, including those sometimes delightful creator commentaries. Alternate audio tracks where directors, writers, producers, and sometimes cast would weigh in on what was going on during the filming of scenes, during the production of what we’re watching on screen, and sometimes just having a well-earned reunion talking about how much fun they had making the movie or episode we’re currently watching.
When home video releases moved more towards Blu-ray discs, the same thing happened, finding more extras to include. And we’re experiencing the same as 4K UHD releases are becoming the new standard.
